What is a Firewall? Do you really need one?

A firewall in a sense is a wall that guards your computer from certain things and in many cases these certain things can be harmful viruses and the like. A firewall is a set of programs that all work together to help keep your computer safe from viruses as well as from keep all your personal information safe from prying eyes. Without the proper protection on your system one can allow someone to be able to see everything that happens on the computer and be able to gain access to information that chances are you would not want everyone see. Think about it, would you want me to be able to see and read all your personal emails? Of course, not and this is where a firewall can come into play.

You may already have a firewall on your system and not even now it. This is a good thing and if you are using Windows, you probably already have one. Windows come pre-installed with Windows Firewall and is known as part of the security suite. Many virus programs will also have a firewall as part of them. Firewalls can both be part of the external system or the internal system. Both of the will work just fine and you can customize the level of protection that you want to have.

Determining the level of protection that you may want on your computer is really up to you. Some questions to consider when thinking about what information can get to your computer include the following. Are you the only one who uses your computer? Are there children in the house that may have access to your system? Do you spend hours on end surfing the net? Viruses are lurking around every corner so if  you spend a lot of time on the net, having a firewall is essential.

You can change your setting as you see fit and you can allow certain sites to go through the wall as well as block certain sites. If you are browsing and happen to stumble upon a website that appears to be unsafe, you will get a warning. It will tell you that your firewall has blocked the site and give you the option to allow it come through. It is always better to be safe then sorry as virus can often cause damage that cannot be repaired. So, yes a firewall is something that you really do need.
