Whether you are a professional executive chef wearing your chef whites and Toque, a starter in the culinary world who wears a simple kitchen shirt, or a home-cook with a simple apron, here are some basic must-have spices for every kitchen.

Salt – A definite must-have in any kitchen, because you won’t get any type of flavor from your food without the basic seasoning of salt and pepper.

Black Pepper – Black pepper is extremely flavorful and ideal for most savory dishes. While usually just a dash of the spice is used, with certain dishes such as fried chicken, a bigger helping can really add some punch to the food.

Cayenne Pepper – Cayenne Pepper packs a bigger punch than normal black pepper, and can add that extra bit of heat to any dish.

Paprika – This is a milder form of pepper, and adds a very earthy note to dishes. There are different versions of paprika, from mild to very hot.

Cinnamon – A very flavorful and aromatic spice which can be used for both sweet and savory dishes. It is also great with toast for breakfast, and has many health benefits.

Cumin – Cumin’s earthy taste and aroma is a great addition to any meat dish, and is usually used in Asian cuisine.

Garlic Powder – Garlic certainly adds a lot of flavor and aroma to food, and has many health benefits as well. While you can use fresh garlic, it is always good to have some garlic powder in hand for quick additions to dishes.

Thyme – Thyme is often sued to flavor meat dishes and stews, as well as certain vegetarian dishes. It offers a mild flavor and aroma with woody notes.

Oregano – A spice you cannot be without if you are making Italian cuisine, and can even add a flavorful kick to most Greek and Mexican dishes.

Rosemary – Rosemary has an earthy, piney flavor and aroma, and is ideal for French and Mediterranean cooking.

Nutmeg – This spice can be used for both sweet and savory dishes, and gives an exotic aroma to the food.
