The Differences Between Corporate and Social Event Planning

Many people think that corporate and social event planning are similar in most, if not all, aspects. But this simply isn’t true! As a client of an event planning company, you will find that there are several differences from the perspective of event planners although many of the suppliers and service providers will also be used.

Frequency of Events

Keep in mind that social events, such as parties, birthdays, and anniversaries, tend to be once-a-year events – or once-in-a-lifetime events especially for weddings. Many of these events mean that there will be no second chances for both the hosts and planners to rectify their event planning mistakes, as is the case for a wedding again. Event planners can cause emotional distress and mental stress for the poor couple and their families in case of wedding planning gone wrong.

In contrast, corporate events can happen several times in a year or once a year depending on the type of events. Examples include company anniversaries, industry conventions, and Christmas parties, as well as shareholders’ meeting, among others. While the success of these events are vital to the reputation of both the client and the corporate planning company, their bloopers will likely not result in emotional distress although reputations may be at stake, too.

Fund Source

Obviously, corporate and commercial events are funded by companies, most of which will likely have large budgets to match the scope of their events. Social events are usually funded via personal money from the couple and parents, as is the case of weddings, or from the hosts in case of anniversaries and birthdays.

For this reason, social events typically have smaller budgets than their commercial and corporate counterparts, although there will always be exceptions to the rule. In all of these instances, nonetheless, an effective event planner will work within the budget, even suggest cost-saving measures that can either keep true to the event’s spirit or enhance it.

Emotional Attachment

Every social event will have an emotional attachment aspect to it since it’s a personal affair. The event planner must then take into account the feelings of the hosts and their guests about the event, such as happiness during wedding planning and somber mood for a death anniversary. Plus, there’s also the fact that the clients will have more emotional investment in the event, which makes the job of an event planner more challenging yet more rewarding, too.

The bottom line: The professional networks of suppliers and service providers used for social and corporate events are the same, even the knowledge and skills required for their successful conclusion. But the best event planners know the subtle differences in handling the project and its client because of their inherent differences.
