It is not necessary to warm up only before participating in sports or exercising, even though they are traditionally done like that. The sole purpose of warm up is to gradually increase the intensity in the physical activity. Likewise before running or playing an intense sport a slow jog to warm the muscles and increase the heart rate. However the warm up should be specific to the exercise that follows. This helps the muscles to prepare them to be used and to activate the energy systems needed for that particular activity. Warms ups certainly improves the effectiveness of the training and there by should be performed as an accompaniment before the main course of exercise. It forms the fundamental or basic part of the main exercise schedule.

Benefits of normal warm ups:

In the initial phases a warm up helps ion raising the rate of heart. This induces an increase in the speed of the delivery of oxygen to the muscles and blood vessels and helps in regulating the body temperature as well. Normal warm up like jogging can easily help in increasing the heart rate. In the aftermath of this warm up should be done in order to increase mobility or stretching of the body parts. These helps the muscles to reach the maximum range of their motion. Some of the best warm ups exercises to best serve this purpose are press-ups, lunges, and squat thrusts. The final stage of the warm up should involve the practice of arousing the neuromuscular instincts that are related to the following activity.

Warming up while watching TV:

Normal warm up exercises can be best-done while watching television. Since normal does not require that much of concentration one can enjoy a favorite TV program while warming up. This will surely act as a boost to the activity. However forgetting what is being done, that happens very often can be harmful. Warm ups should be only done to the extent till where it makes the body warm, not more than that. Also proper positioning of the television and regular changes in the position of the exercises are the two next important things.
