Star Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vinay Virmani, Vikram, Tabu, Monica Dogra

Director: Bejoy Nambiar

3 Destinies, 3 Lives, 1 Name David - The premise of Bejoy Nambiar's second directorial venture is interesting enough to peak our curiosity in 'David'. Add to it the success of his last surprise hit 'Shaitan' and you get another reason to watch this uniqe tale.

But is 'David'. as engaging and entertaining as 'Shaitan'? Partially, we would say.

The story, characters, drama, action and tension set in three different eras and different cities is efficiently captured on celluloid. Special mention to the thrilling moments created in the 90s and 70s black and white era - the muslim movements prevalant in 70s and the political ramblings happening in Mumbai in 99 look realistic. Amid all this a common man's struggle and giving in to the 'chalta hai' attitude leaves you thinking.

On the whole, the individual stories of the three Davids too enfold dramatically, despite a smooth to and fro movement, however what goes amiss is the convincing connect between the three stories of three lives, leaving you emotionaly hungary at the end. That's because of the script that tends to get lazy at a few points in the film. But that's pardonable in the light of Nambiar's convincing attempt at experimenting with a unique concept and impressive performances.

'David'. is a story of three men living three different lives in different eras connected with a common thread - a name called 'David'. First David (Neil Nitin Mukesh) lives in the London of 1975. Raised by a gangster Ghani, Neil has high-regards for him and even Ghani loves him more than his own son. One truth and his life changes forever. Monica Dogra who plays Noor is his love interest. Second David, Vinay Virmani breathes in India of 1999. He is a middle class boy from Mumbai, who has dreams to make it big in the world of Music. One fine day a gross political development kisses his life and he doesn't remain same. Last David (Vikram) hails from Goa of 2010. He is the most colourful character. He has been ditched by a girl, he loves his friends beloved, talks to his dead father and takes advice from a local masseuse (Tabu). Now, how these three different lives cross paths taking forward the plot forms the rest of the story.

Talking about performances, Neil Nitin Mukesh who plays a man of few words wins your heart with his power packed performance. On the other hand, Vikram as a drunkard, heart broken but bindaas David from Goa touches your heart but his track looks a little out of place. Vinay Virmani as the Guitar junkie is impressive both as a carefree young lad who dreams to make it big as well as a battered youth at the hands of India's political situation. Monica Dogra looks gorgeous and acts well. Isha Sharwani as the deaf and mute girl looks beautiful but her character looks half cooked. Tabu as the notorious body massager is a treat to watch. She owns the frame every time she comes on screen. Supporting cast does a decent job.

Comic relief in this otherwise serious off-beat films comes from Vikram's track. Right from his conversation to Tabu to his part with his dead father (Saurabh Shukla) bring humour. Musically the film is a typical Bejoy Nambiar film, where background score has an opposite emotion to what is being portrayed on the screen, which adds variety to the screenplay. Remo D'Souza's Goan number is one such contrasting masterpiece. The songs dwell well in the script. And the moder adaptation of 'Dumaadum Mast Kalandar' is a treat.

Cinematography of 'David'. is another high-point of the film. The way the three eras have been shot with clear demarcations especially the black and white picturisation of 1975 is commendable. Here you can't forget the editing, which is remarkable in the back and forth movement, though could have been a little crispier in the first half, where the film drags.

On the whole, Bejoy Nambiar's David. is an impressive piece of cinema, which makes you think - think that is wrong actually wrong or what you thought wrong is what is actually right. The film deserves a watch for Neil Nitin Mukesh's performance and Nambiar's streak of experimentation.
