Mascara is a type of cosmetic with which no woman’s make-up box would be complete. It is mostly used to highlight and darken eyelashes. Mascara is available in various forms: cake, cream, liquid. It’s also available in numerous colours, tints and formulas. The basic purpose for which the mascara is used is to highlight, thicken, well-define, lengthen and emphasize eyelashes. Mascara is also sometimes available in wand-tube applicators. Mascara brushes are sometimes straight or curled with some times thick or thin bristles. Mascara comes in various different colours too –green, blue.

Mascara gives a finishing touch to the eyelashes if applied from root up to the tip in a single stroke. It is applied horizontally and from the underside. While applying mascara to lower lashes, the wand should be held vertically and mascara is applied from side to side. Many ladies prefer applying more than just a single coat.

History:

Mascara or a type of it has been used since Ancient Greek. Mascara, has an interesting and long history.
In Ancient Greece, a person could be felled by the evil eye. People used to hire sorcerers to give drive away their enemies. The Greeks and Romans were very superstitious people. Some people used to believe that looking deep in someone’s eyes would literally take away a person’s soul. The African people believed in the same concept. People started applying “Kohl” which was black in colour with the belief that it would reflect the soul-taker and he/she won’t be able to take away the soul. Egyptian people discovered that applying kohl around the eye reflected the intense desert heat and light.

In the modern Western World, mascara was invented in 1913. The word mascara comes from the Italian word “maschera” and means to “mask”. T.L. Williams, a chemist, invented it. The mascara at that time was formed of two ingredients - colorants and carnauba wax. Eugene Rimmel invented the first mascara product in the 19th century.

Usage of mascara:

Mascara may be used on all eyelashes. Mascara can be applied to upper and lower eyelashes for different purposes. Mascara is applied to the top eyelashes for a 'heavy-lidded' look or to the bottom lashes to give a widened look to the eyes. Mascara containing nylon fibers give lashes a longer and complete appearance. Some mascaras with Pro-vitamin B5 act as a conditioner for eyelashes. It gives them a softer and more natural feel.
