How many of those home and garden magazines do you buy and just wish that you could live there? How often do you think to yourself "if only I could put a wall around the garden/pool/house then our home would look like something out of a magazine too". Well now you can and its all down to some simple retaining walls. These walls are so pretty when built out of natural materials that you will want to stare at them for yours on end. But where are you going to put these walls and what are you going to have them made out of? Good job we are here because we are going to tell you all about the different options that retaining walls have to offer. Lets start with the types of walls. You can have a retaining wall around the outside of your lawn and this will show the boundary between you and your neighbors. You can also have them around your flowerbeds and this will make them more of a feature. Some retaining walls even have flowerbed built into the top of them to make them even more of a feature.

If a retaining walls isn't what you are after then what about a pool surround? These look fantastic and take away that standard pool look and add a bit of glamor to your pool. Just think about your friends faces when they see your brand new pool complete with your surround made out of all natural materials and incorporating a few water features including a waterfall! Nothing says magazine home like a waterfall in your backyard! So what would you like your retaining walls to be made out of? There are lots of options such as rock and stone, concrete sleepers, block and brick and even timber sleepers. Whatever look you are going for, you can get it with a retaining wall made out of whatever material you like. And the best bit is that you won't have to do any of the work!

There are many, many types of retaining wall materials available today. Field stone, railroad ties, pressure treated ties, brick, inter-locking masonry block that resembles stone, brick, and so on. The different types require slightly different methods of installation but all have some of the same basic concepts. You must start with good solid soil underneath. Do not attempt to build on top of topsoil, wet loam or other soft and pliable ground material. Your wall will simply move with the earth and self destruct over time.
