It is great to enjoy your days with friends and family when you have a nice swimming pool at your home or even a nice hot tub in the backyard. But did you know that everything from replacement cartridges, backwashing the filters, regular inspection etc. becomes the owners job and responsibility? A pool needs to be properly cleaned, sanitized and suitable for using conditions. Thus, sanitizing it and maintaining the hygiene levels of the water and the overall swimming pool is very crucial.

So, what is pool filter media and how to clean it? Well, pool filter media is what is inside the pool filter. It needs to be cleaned and washed all the time because this is where all the dust and dirt gets trapped and collected. Cleaning pool filter media mean increasing the efficiency of the filter.

Well, there are mainly 3 types of filtration systems - sand filter, DE and cartridge filter. Each has its own mechanism, uses, advantages and disadvantages. The question is how to clean the pool filter media or what is present inside the actual filter so that efficiency levels increase and better filtration can take place. This will eventually, lessen the burden on energy usage too!

  • If you have a sand filter system, first and foremost thing is to shut off the system and just take out the drain plug. Let it be like that overnight so it will drain itself out. Next step is to use an appropriate vacuum and clean out the sand which is stuck in the filter media. Make sure you do not touch any valve inside or else it will cause unnecessary damage. After the sand is sucked out, replace it by Silica Sand again (as per the instructions in the manual) and replace the drain plug. Now rinse off the filter and you are good to go!
  • Well, if you have a cartridge filter, all you need to do is purchase a replacement cartridge and you are done. It is easier to install a replacement.
  • The most complicated yet very useful and functional is the DE filtration system. The initial process is the same as sand filter where in you have to plug it off and let it drain off overnight. Just use a normal hose and sift out the excess DE powder from everywhere inside. You can throw off the old grids and get replacements instead!

Well, some DE type filters can become overbearing and complicated. In such scenarios, it is best to consult the experts or get a new one at least. How about Pool Filters?
