The increase in waste generation is a serious issue affecting our planet. Waste disposal is one of the main problems being faced by people around the planet. The rate of production of waste is much greater than the rate of disposal. Landfill sites are rapidly filling up and other means of disposal are causing a lot of pollution in the environment. One of the main causes of waste generation is domestic sources. Yes, it is not the industries or the companies who are creating the maximum waste, but it is the homes that you live in. Many people are beginning to realize this and are paying attention to the needs of the environment.

One of the upcoming trends that are helping in the reduction of waste generation is the practice of recycling waste products. A large amount of materials can be recycled, including paper products, glass, cardboard, metals and plastics. By seeing this list we realize that most of the waste material that goes into our dustbins can easily be recycled and used for other purposes. This will significantly reduce the amount of garbage being created. If every house begins to do this, then the end benefit for the environment will be quite huge.

Paper, along with its products, is the largest component of domestic waste. All paper products are recyclable and they can be used again to make recycled paper. Though it does not look like fresh paper, but it can be used to carry out all the functions of paper. The more paper that is recycled, leads to more trees getting saved from getting cut. Newspapers, greeting cards, envelope mails, old books and paper bags can all be recycled. Even shredded paper can be recycled. If there are no recycling plants nearby, then paper can also be used as a material in composting.

Technology is constantly developing new ways to be able to reuse plastic materials. Plastic is a very dangerous material for the environment, as it does not degrade itself. It can stay in the ground for thousands of years constantly, releasing toxic materials. Burning it releases toxic gases into the atmosphere. Recycling of plastic is a viable option now. Plastic water bottles, disposable cups, plates, CD/DVD cases and containers, all can be sent for recycling, as this will greatly reduce the amount of garbage produced.

Rubber is also a widely used product that is quite harmful for the environment. Rubber is used in many household appliances but is most used in the tires of automobiles. Used tires are dumped in landfills and the amount of tires thrown away every year is large. They fill up a lot of space in landfills. Tires and other rubber products can be recycled into reclaimed rubber that is used in making a lot of items of varied uses. It is not only easy to use, but is also an environment friendly alternative to rubber. By seeing the amount of waste that a single home produces, people must feel the need to recycle, as their contribution will help in reducing the amount of waste produced. Recycling is an easy way to help make the planet clean and green.
