New seeding is in need of intensive irrigation for getting established properly. Light and frequent watering is desirable so that the seed and surface are perpetually moist. They must be kept moist for 30 days after plantation. In summer, watering must be done 4 times in a day. During germination if soil dries out seedling may perish. Wherever sodding and plugging is done, frequent irrigation is needed only till the sod or plug gets rooted. Afterwards, irrigation is required only once in two or three days. Irrigation systems which are deep and penetrating that make the soil wet upto considerable depth and promote deep rooting produce a high quality and vigorous turf. During irrigation, it is needed to water in early morning to minimize disease possibility and take care to wet the soil upto four to six inches.

Water cycling

Warm season grasses like Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and St. Augustine grass are famine resistant than cool season grasses (like tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass). They need approximately 20% less water. The frequency of watering during a week depends on when runoff begins. If a grass required 50 minutes of irrigation per week and runoff start after 25 minutes, then water two times a week for 25 minutes. When soil runoff occurs before 10 minutes (this happens when water seeps in the soil at a slow speed), water cycling is essential. It implies that until overflow just starts, make the system off and start the system in 30 minutes prior to drying of the soil. Each day many cycles may be proved essential so that the optimum amount of water reaches the lawn.

Disadvantages and Remedies

In Western North America, there are several Kentucky bluegrass lawns that need tremendous amount of water. A large amount of western municipalities water supply is spent in watering lawns. Water reservoirs have to be created. Xeriscape gardening (or low water used landscaping) is used to conserve domestic water. The following rules are put into effect. Plants native to the area are used. Selection of plants that provide color, shade and texture throughout the year is done. Alter the soils water retaining capacity by using compost. Use low water requiring grasses like blue grama, buffalo grass, tall fescue or wheat grass.
