It is very easy to say that beer is one of the world’s most popular beverages (after water that is!), and even more so with the introduction of handcrafted artisan craft beer in London and around the globe. All you need to do is search for craft beer near me, and you can easily and conveniently order and get your stock of beer.

There are so many fun facts about beer however, that you may not even know about. For example, did you know:

  • There is a special study of beer called Zythology where they analyse the ingredients that go into beer as well as their effects on the brewing process, not to mention its history and collecting all known knowledge regarding beer.

  • There is a phobia called cenosillicaphobia, which is the fear of having an empty glass of beer.

  • In ancient Peru, breweries were operated by women, and you had to be one of noble birth to be able to do it.

  • The country that consumes the largest amount of beer, according to studies, is China, while the award for the highest per capita consumption goes to the Czech Republic.

  • The oldest known brewery is believed to be the brewery at Weihenstephan in Freising, Germany, which dates back to around 1040 AD.

  • Against popular belief, beer does not give you a beer belly, but rather the ingredients in beer stimulates heartier appetites.

  • According to some archaeologists, it has been found that the builders of the great pyramids in Egypt used to drink at least 4 litres of beer a day. This just goes to show that drinking beer can result in great things!

  • During the Middle Ages in Europe, drinking beer was considered to be safer than drinking water.

  • There was a literal beer flood in London in the year 1814 when some large vats at a brewery broke and a wave of beer flooded the streets destroying some homes and even damaging a local pub.
