Selwyn Snowfields ski Resort is two hours from Canberra. This resort has a small ski area and is more family oriented and more affordable, similar to the Las Lenas Ski Resort in Argentina. This is a good place to learn ski and snowboarding. If you don’t want to ski you can enjoy the view of the magnificent mountains covered with snow and relax. The nearby resorts include Thredbo Ski Resort and Perisher. Not many public transports are available so it advisable to drive or hire a car to reach this place.
Best Time in Selwyn Snowfields
The winter ski season begins in June and ends by October. It’s best to inquire about weather conditions and how many lifts are open and such details before heading to the resort. During winter time, your way to this place is via the Snowy Mountains Highway from Talbingo if you are coming from the west or Adaminaby if you are coming from the East.
Snowfields
This resort has an elevation ranging from 1492m at the base to 1614m at the top and has a vertical drop of 122m. They have a skiable land of 45 hectares and cater to all kinds of skiers and snowboarders. The expert skiers might not find too many opportunities though. They have around 10 lifts giving way to slopes suited for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. They also have 17 trails. The longest run is around 800m and this is called the "Long Arm Run". They have a 45km marked cross country trail. The Racecourse Run has some challenging terrain for the advanced skiers and snowboarders. Night skiing is not safe in this region unless accompanied by a consultant or an instructor.
The resort is relatively on a lower altitude due to which maintaining a natural snow cover is difficult. They have developed extensive snowmaking machines to overcome this problem and give you a pleasant stay.
Accommodation and Facilities
The closest accommodation for the tourists is at the Providence Portal holiday village on the higher side of the Lake Eucumbene. You may also choose accommodations in Adaminaby or Anglers Reach. The resort has ski gears and clothing for hire at reasonable prices. Among other facilities offered are Information center, public telephones, Coach Driver’s rooms, rest rooms and Mother's rooms. They have plenty of space for parking lot at Selwyn.
They have a snow sports school here where you can learn skiing and snowboarding. You may be a beginner or you may want to hone your skills on skiing, these instructors help you through.
