Desktop, Laptop, and Tablet – The Evolution of Computers

The evolution in technology started when Apple’s CEO & co-founder Steve Jobs and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates decided to pursue their dream and dropped out of college. It was then the first personal computers hit the market and changed the way things worked.

Later came a day, when personal computers became more like a necessity and the term they got was desktop. Desktop computers comprised of a CPU (control processing unit, the main power hub), a monitor, a keyword, and a mouse. It was accepted worldwide not just by individuals but also by companies, government offices, and every other place which required technology.

Soon desktop computers became a household name and the computer industry turned into a billion dollar industry. But, that wasn’t the end – it was just the beginning. No later, desktops were replaced with laptops. Technology moved to the next level. Laptops had every feature of a normal desktop, and they were more convenient, and were easily moveable from place to place.

One of the purposes of laptops was to replace desktops in mobility, size, and structure. It is also called as a notebook computer as it can be folded and carried anywhere, anytime. Plus, the extendable battery life gave people a completely different computing experience.

The laptop industry continues to grow around the world. Today, desktop shares a special place in the market and cater to a certain group of people, while laptop occupies a different side and have a good market share.

Things looked good, but little did people imagine they will witness a big leap this soon. Thanks to Steve Jobs once again for his vision and for bringing tablets like Apple iPad. It is a single screen device which can be used either with fingers, or by a stylus pen.

Tablet computers are designed for a different market segment. Most of the users of tablets either use them for gaming, reading, doing social media networking, basic e-mailing, etc. Though, tablets are just launched in the market, they are widely appreciated and have become a style statement.

The target audience of all three computing devices – desktop, laptop, and tablet is different. Some prefer desktop for their offices and household, while others prefer laptop for personal use, and tablet for a style statement. All three of them are good, it’s just that the device one buys should cater the need and solve the computing problems. And the technological evolution continues.
