The time spent in watching TV can also be utilized for some other purpose such as doing breathing exercises. These exercises do not require a person to move away from his place. He can sit on a chair or sleep on his back, while doing breathing exercises. Breathing is the foundation of life. One’s respiratory system brings oxygen to his blood stream, which then carries it to the rest of his body. Human body simply cannot function without enough oxygen.

How to do it?

Sit erect on a chair. Place one hand on your navel, and the other on your chest. Then breathe in and out through your nose at a normal rate. Simply observe your breathing rather than controlling it. Observe which hand is moving first. Watch out whether your breathing moves your chest or your stomach first. It is better if the hand that is on navel moves first, and then the other one placed on chest. This type of breathing is called abdominal breathing. Air should first fill the stomach, and then the chest cavity. According to many people, abdominal breathing is the right way to breathe. It is a good idea to watch the breathing process itself. Notice the way the air feels as it goes into your nostrils, and passes through the back of your throat, and into your lungs. Observe the change of each breath from inhalation to exhalation. Continue to watch your breathing for 12 breaths in and out. Then slowly bring your attention away from your breathing and to the world around you. People who suffer from anxiety attacks can benefit from abdominal breathing. It can relax and calm them down.

Precautions

People who do breathing exercises use their diaphragm instead of their chests. Breathing exercises should be done using slow abdominal breathing, because deep breathing can aggravate an anxiety attack. People doing breathing exercises should make sure that they inhale through their noses and not their mouths. The reason behind this is inhaling and exhaling through mouth can also intensify an anxiety attack. These breathing techniques alleviate the symptoms of panic attack by making a person focus on his breathing, which can make him tranquil. However, doing breathing exercises in proper way is very crucial.
