Hanging around

A bed canopy is a material hung from the top of a bed that falls down to the edges and rests on the floor. It primarily helps in keeping away mosquitoes. It also helps in retaining heat inside and maintaining the warmth. It also looks good and creates a glamorous ambience.

Types of Bed Canopies

There are basically two types of bed canopies: one is a single point canopy and the other is rectangular. In the first type, a semi circular wooden piece is hung from the ceiling and cloth flows down from this point to the edges of the bed. In the second type, four vertical poles are extruded from the corners of the bed and form a rectangular frame above. Cloth flows down from this frame onto the bed.
While the first type has a more romantic appearance, actually the cloth forms a conical body because of which, very less headroom is available at the corners and edges of the bed. Getting in and out of bed may become annoying after a while.
The second type looks more common but has a greater practical convenience. The vertical surfaces formed at the edges of a bed; from this structure; make the canopy like a box and hence allows total headroom.
Various materials are used for a bed canopy: net is the most commonly used material as it not only permits more transparency, but also looks light and thus attractive. Sheers or very thin curtain material may also be used for this purpose. A thicker material can also be used where bed canopy is viewed as a visual barrier to the bed and person sleeping on it.
Wooden frames can also be constructed at the upper ends of the frame. They do not conceal anything of the bed, but give a get-up that gives the bed a decent and wholesome elegant look.

Selection

While selecting the material for your bed canopy, color and texture should be kept in mind.
The color may be of a pastel shade, it must go well with the color scheme of the curtains and other furnishings. Light hues will create a romantic atmosphere on lighting.
